As you’d expect, Volubilis’ main draws are its ruins. The stonework and amazing mosaics will grab your attention. You’ll likely spend most of your time there looking at them. Some are in better shape than others. But it’s the whole site that’s really impressive
The Romans probably picked Volubilis for its good soil and hidden spot.
But people lived in Volubilis long before the Romans came, maybe 5000 years ago. Old bits of pottery found there hint that it was home to one of the world’s oldest groups of people.
The Romans ran things for hundreds of years until they had to leave. Then the Arabs showed up in 708 AD to claim the land. The place stayed important during the Islamic time, which is when the first Muslims came to Morocco.
By the 1300s, it seems no one lived there anymore. The Romans had left long ago, and the Arabs had also moved on to other places.
In the 1600s, Moulay Ismail sadly tore down parts of the city to build new structures. Yet, many old buildings survived and can still be seen today. More bad luck hit in 1755 when an earthquake destroyed many old buildings, wiping out entire structures. Luckily, you can still see some sights in Volubilis like archways, pillars, and a big water system.
Now, Volubilis is popular with students and history buffs. There are no more fights over the land. Instead, scientists only battle the weather to save what’s left of this old site.
