Itinerary Idea in Detail

The Ultimate 5 Days Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour Experience offers travelers an unforgettable journey through the heart of Morocco. This carefully crafted itinerary takes us on a scenic route from the historic city of Fes to the vibrant Marrakech, with a mesmerizing detour through the Sahara Desert.

The adventure begins early in the morning as we depart from Fes. The journey takes us through the Middle Atlas Mountains, offering breathtaking panoramic views along the way. The first stop is Ifrane, often referred to as the “Switzerland of Morocco” due to its European-style architecture and clean streets. Here, we can explore a small garden and see the famous stone lion sculpture.

Next, we continue to the cedar forests of Azrou, where we have the opportunity to interact with the local Barbary macaques in their natural habitat. These friendly monkeys are a highlight for many visitors.

As the landscape begins to change, becoming more arid, we reach Midelt, known for its apple orchards. This town serves as a perfect lunch stop, allowing us to sample local cuisine and rest before continuing the journey.

The afternoon drive takes us through the Ziz Valley, offering stunning views of palm groves and ancient kasbahs. As the day progresses, the landscape transforms dramatically, signaling our approach to the Sahara Desert.

The final destination for the day is Merzouga, the gateway to the Sahara. Here, we trade our vehicle for camels, embarking on a memorable trek into the heart of the Erg Chebbi dunes. The camel ride typically lasts about an hour and a half, allowing us to witness a spectacular desert sunset.

We spend the night in a desert camp, enjoying a traditional Moroccan dinner under the stars. Many camps offer comfortable tents with en-suite bathrooms, providing a luxurious experience in the midst of the desert. The evening often includes Berber music and stargazing, offering a truly immersive desert experience.

The second day begins with an early morning wake-up call to witness the breathtaking desert sunrise. After breakfast at the camp, we return to Merzouga by camel, where we have the opportunity to freshen up before continuing the journey.

We head towards the Todra Gorge, a series of limestone river canyons in the eastern part of the High Atlas Mountains. The gorge, with its towering 300-meter high walls, offers a dramatic contrast to the vast desert landscape of the previous day.

After exploring the Todra Gorge, we continue to the Dades Valley, known for its stunning rock formations and lush palm groves. The winding road through the valley, often called the “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs,” offers numerous photo opportunities.

We spend the night in a comfortable hotel or riad in the Dades Valley, allowing us to rest and recharge for the next day’s adventures.

On the third day, we journey through the Rose Valley, famous for its annual rose festival. Depending on the season, we might see fields of pink Damascus roses, used to make various cosmetic products.

The journey continues to Ouarzazate, often called the “Hollywood of Africa” due to its popularity as a filming location for many movies and TV shows. Here, we can visit the famous Atlas Film Studios and explore the Taourirt Kasbah, a 19th-century palace that offers insight into traditional Moroccan architecture.

We spend the night in Ouarzazate, allowing us to explore the city and perhaps enjoy a traditional Moroccan hammam experience.

The fourth day begins with a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Ben Haddou, a spectacular fortified village that has been featured in numerous films and TV series. We can explore the narrow streets and climb to the top of the kasbah for panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

After leaving Ait Ben Haddou, we continue through the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka pass. This winding mountain road offers breathtaking views and is considered one of the most scenic drives in Morocco.

We end the journey in Marrakech, where we settle into our accommodation and perhaps take an evening stroll through the famous Jemaa el-Fnaa square to get a first taste of this vibrant city.

The final day of the tour is dedicated to exploring Marrakech. A local guide often joins the group to provide insights into the city’s rich history and culture. Key sites to visit include the Koutoubia Mosque, the Bahia Palace, and the Saadian Tombs.

We can also explore the bustling souks, where we can find traditional Moroccan crafts, spices, and textiles. The tour might include a visit to the beautiful Jardin Majorelle, a botanical garden once owned by Yves Saint Laurent.

The day typically ends with free time for us to explore on our own, perhaps enjoying a final Moroccan dinner or revisiting Jemaa el-Fnaa to experience the square’s vibrant nighttime atmosphere.

This 5-day Fes to Marrakech desert tour offers a comprehensive experience of Morocco’s diverse landscapes and rich cultural heritage. From the medieval medina of Fes to the golden dunes of the Sahara, from the dramatic gorges of the Atlas Mountains to the bustling streets of Marrakech, this journey provides travelers with unforgettable memories and a deep appreciation for the beauty and complexity of Morocco.
